Helsell Fetterman LLP, a premier mid-sized law firm in the Pacific Northwest providing trusted advice and formidable advocacy for its clients is pleased to welcome Shawn Butler and Nicholas Harper-Smith to the partnership.
Shawn Butler represents clients in all phases of litigation in Washington State and Federal Courts in matters involving business disputes, real estate, personal injury and insurance coverage.
A native of the Northwest, Shawn graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 2000. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer and Army Ranger deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Shawn left active duty and returned to his home state to attend law school. Shawn graduated from the University of Washington School of Law where he earned his JD and a LLM in Health Law.
Shawn has been recognized by Super Lawyers® as a Rising Star since 2017.

Nick Harper-Smith has been practicing law for 11 years and joined Helsell Fetterman in 2017. Nick serves as a trusted advisor and legal counsel to family-owned businesses, family offices, entrepreneurs, private investors, business owners and executives. Nick enjoys the depth, complexity and nuance of each client’s business and family, and welcomes the opportunity to provide practical and effective advice and solutions.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Nick graduated from the Wheaton College (Massachusetts) summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 2005. He then moved to Chicago and attended the University of Chicago Law School, graduating in 2008. Following law school, Nick was a law clerk for the Honorable Christopher Sontchi in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware. After his clerkship, Nick practiced in New York as an associate in the law firms of Baker & McKenzie LLP and Ropes & Gray LLP.
In 2016, Nick was recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 by The National Black Lawyers.
